Sleeping in your car in South Australia

South Australia's road authority records that there is no State legislation prohibiting camping in rest areas, and that long term camping can therefore only be discouraged. That sentence is the department's own, written to its staff, and it is the most permissive thing any Australian road authority has put in writing.

What that sentence covers, and what it does not

It is about State legislation and about rest areas. It says nothing about council by-laws, national parks, Crown land, or any particular street. And the same instruction tells staff to put up “no camping” signs where long stays become a problem — a sign is enforceable in a way the sentence is not.

The same instruction treats an overnight stay as a legitimate way to manage fatigue, while saying that stays longer than 24 hours are not encouraged.
