Unincorporated SA: sleeping in your car

Unincorporated area

The State's road data records this area as unincorporated rather than naming a council. This site has not established which body, if any, makes local rules here, so it claims nothing about them — and nothing here means anything is permitted. At the state rest areas below, the State position applies: South Australia's road authority records that there is no State legislation prohibiting camping in rest areas, and that long term camping can therefore only be discouraged. Everywhere else in this area, treat the rule as unknown and obey signage.

Signs override this page. Whatever is signed at the site is the rule that applies, no matter what is written here.

Where this comes from

  • “As there is no State legislation prohibiting camping in rest areas and any policing of such legislation would be difficult, long term camping can only be discouraged.” — Operational Instruction 20.03 — Roadside Rest Areas on Rural Roads (February 2026), Government of South Australia, Department for Infrastructure and Transport.
