Transport for NSW publishes no operating status for this site, so this page does not say it is open. It publishes one for roughly a third of its rest areas, and leaves the rest blank rather than marking them open — blank is not a statement either way.

Light vehicles only rest area on Oxley Highway at Walcha, in Walcha, New South Wales. New South Wales rest areas are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, as places to park safely and take a break.

Signs override this page. Whatever is signed at the site is the rule that applies, no matter what is written here.

This is not a campsite. The NSW Government's own driver fatigue guidance states that you must not camp in rest areas, and directs anyone needing a longer rest to a campsite, hotel or motel.

Transport for NSW publishes no water, power, shower, shade or lighting information for its rest areas. Where a facility is not listed above, the state has not said either way.

We have not read Walcha's local laws on camping or staying overnight in a vehicle, so this page makes no claim about them. NSW keeps no register of them to read. What we can say is state-wide: That power has a limit written into the section itself: a council notice must not prohibit or regulate taking a vehicle into, or driving, parking or using a vehicle in, a public place that is a road or road related area within the meaning of section 4(1) of the Road Transport Act 2013. The Act allows one narrow exception, for parking a vehicle in order to offer it for sale in prescribed areas.
