Open data: the files behind the maps
Every map and the finder on this site read one of these files, and every file under /data/ is listed here. They are public, free, need no key, and may be fetched from any origin. Each is republished under the licence its source publisher set, and the licence column is that licence, not this site's.

The NSW Government says you must not camp in rest areas. |

| libraries-nsw.geojson | Public libraries in New South Wales (page) Public libraries from the state's own directory, one point each. Names and locations only. Per-council map files for Queensland councils that prohibit vehicle camping (page) Two files for each council in ban-zones.geojson, cut for that council’s own page map so it does not fetch the whole state: <slug>-zone.geojson is its boundary and <slug>.geojson is the state rest areas inside it. |

| gazetteer.json | Australian localities for the finder’s town search (page) Suburb and locality names with a point inside each, used only when a typed town is not one the finder index already names. A point is where a locality is, not a place to stop. |

| places.json | FreeCamps nearest-place finder index (page) The places the finder sorts by distance. Places where a published rule prohibits staying overnight are left out, so WA stopping places without a 24-hour sign and closed NSW rest areas are not in it; being in it does not mean camping is allowed. Each row’s rule is FreeCamps’ one-line reading, linked to the page that quotes the source, and some rules say you must not camp. |

| agent.json | FreeCamps MCP server data: rules, councils and help lines (page) What the MCP server at /mcp answers from. The claims are quoted government text, each with its source URL and the date it was read; the council statuses are the ones the council pages show, and an unread council is unknown, never permitted; the help lines are the ones /no-vehicle/ lists. It also holds what each finder rule means and which council each finder place is in. |

What these files are and are not
- A place in a file is not permission to sleep there. The rule that applies is on the place's page, quoted from the law, and a sign at the place overrides it.
- The one-line summary is this site's reading. On the rest-area files,
subis FreeCamps' shortest statement of the rule, not a field the road authority published. Cite the rule's source, linked from the page. - Coordinates, names and amenities are the publisher's. Facilities change and government datasets lag; check before relying on one.
- Not legal advice. See the disclaimer.
What is not here
- Rest areas in Victoria (651 sites) and the Northern Territory (211 sites) are held, not published. The only national dataset carrying them, National Formal Rest Areas from National Freight Data Hub (Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts), has no licence set by its publisher, so it is not this site's to republish. No state register that could replace it has been found yet.
- No library file for South Australia, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory: none publishes a statewide library directory under a licence that permits republishing. Ask the Public Library Services of the State Library of South Australia, the Northern Territory Library and Libraries ACT.
Reusing them
Credit each source as the licence column names it. The full list of publishers and licences is on sources and licences; this site's own writing is CC BY 4.0 and does not re-licence the records. How a rule gets verified before it reaches a page is on how we verify. Assistants and agents: the agent guide.
